Classification of the oils

in the thirteen chapter of Charak Samhita, Lord Atreya answers questions by Agnivehsa that he asked about oils.

Ghee, Oil, fat and bone marrow.

The origination of snehas are of two types:

1. Sthawar OR that comes from vegetables and plants
2. Jangam That comes from Animals


Sthawar are sunflower oil, pista, beans, pulses, harada, arandi, seasame etc.
Jangam are fish, birds, fats, and bone marrow, Milk and other dairy products are also considered as jangam snehaas.

In all the snehas, Ghee, oils, fat and bone marrow are best. Out of these four Ghee is the best.

Ghee does not loses its quality when mixed with other eatables. But when mixed with ghee other elements change their qualities.

It pacifies vata and pitta in the body. It provides juices, charms the body. It provides semen in the body. It makes the body soft. It immproves sound and color.

Oils or the snehas pacify vata. It gives energy. Oils help in increasing muscles in the body. Snehaas makes the vagina pure of the female.

In case of an injury vasa or the fat is best for treatment. For exercise and massage fat is best.

Majja can be consumed for strength and semen. It almso strengthens the bones in the body.






times of using snehas

winters- ghee
vasanta - fat
majja - monsoon

when it is too hot or too cold weather, you should not drink Snehaas.


kartika and maghashisha in winters, chaitra and vaishakh in vasant season. Shravan and bhadoprada in monsoon are the best to consume these Snehaas.

Except these months do not consume snehaas.

There are exceptions to this rule:

People who have aggrevated pitta and vata can consume snehaas through out the year. People with aggrevated kapha, they can consume in the daytime during the winters.

If a person is suffering from aggrevated vata and pitta when the weather is too hot then he might faint or even suffer from jaundice.

If a person suffering from aggrevated kapha drinks Snehaas in the winters then he would suffer from constipation, indigestion, pain in stomach and even jaundice.

Drink warm water after consuming ghee

After drinking oil one must eat pulses soup.

After consuming fat and meat and majja one drink drink rice's soup.

By saying that consuming snehas it does not mean that you have drink them directly. You must always consume them in combination of other foods.

You can include them different recipes or foods that you eat in the kitchen. For example, khichdi, roti and other dishes.



conclusion:

people who have aggrevated vata and pitta can consume these snehas the four of them al through out the year. BUT NOT WHEN THE ENVIRONMENT is too hot or too cold.

Second most important thing about Snehas is that you must drink warm water after consuming them. DO NOT DRINK cold water after having them.

If you follow these rules you will not get any side effects from using the snehaas




Different ways of using the SNehas

Snehas can be used along with 24 types of foods:

These are: Odana, vilepi, rasa (juice), meat, milk, curd, yawagu, soup, shaak, yush, kambalik, khad, sattu, tilkuta, madhya, licking, eating, massage, enema, uttaravasti, gandusha (insert pipe in throat and put the oil inside), in the ears, nose and eye cleaning.


odana: when snehas are boiled with rice and water. If you remvoe the liquid the left rice is called Odana.
Vilepi: When you don't remove the liquid from the Odana then it is vilepi.

Rasa: Soup of the rice or meat. It can be of three types: too much diluted in water, little diluted with water and very thick!

Yuusha: Soup of the pulses. 18 times water and boil it. When the water is halved the bag of pulses is removed and we are left with yusha.

Soup: when boiled in 18 times water and remove the pulses bag when only 1/4th water is left is soup.

Yavagu: diluted rice mixed with Manda

Kambalik: fluid that is left, when the roots of trees boiled with pomegrnate etc .

khad: fluid that is prepared from fruits.

sattu: is made by grinding gram and barley.

Tilkuta: sesame is grinded with sugar or jaggery.


You can mix snehas with the above list of food types. Ghee is considered as the best to mix. For example in sattu one can mix sugar and laddus can be made.

When you mix snehas in these eatables not only they become tasty but also more healthier.

Snehas should always be mixed before consumption. The only exception of using snehas all alone is when you use it for putting in nose, ears and enema.


There are three quantities of snehas:

  • Uttam (full) -
  • madhyam (medium)-
  • hasva (minimum/less)-

People who can bear thirst must only drink uttam levels of snehas. You must have a good digestion power. If you have constipation. During a snake bite also ghee can be drank all alone.

Madhyama and hasva usage of the snehas is always more beneficial.

Elderly, kids and people suffering from cough must consume snehas within limits.


Who must consume ghee:
people who are suffering from vata or pitta prakarti. Or suffering from Any ailment because of imbalance or aggrevated vata or pitta,

want to improve their eyesight. People who are injured. Who re very old or very young or do not have strength. People who want to live longer. Those people who want to gain strength good color and voice, those who want complete nourishment. Those who want flexibility, charm on their face, good memory and improve their digestion power.

To improve intellect and increase the strength of the senses and indriyas. Those who have hit by weapons or bitten by snakes or suffer from poison. Must consume ghee.

oil:
those people are obese. Suffering from Vata diseases. Those who are suffering from constipation. Have germs in gut. Wounds in the viens or nervous system. Those people must consume oil during the winters.


Vasa
Those who can bear air and sunlight. Skin is dry. Those have become thin because of too much of walking and lifting weights. Whose semen is less. Those who are thin and have no fat in their body. Whose joints, bones, nervous system or stomach is suffering from ailment. Or there is discomfort or pain, these people suffering from bloating and the digestion is strong. THose people must consume fat.

One must make sure that did not get allergy or side effects from eating fat.


Majja Or bone marrow
Those with good appettite and digestion power. Those who can easily digest Ghee and other heave foods.

Those have aggrevated Vata, with strong abdomen and the liver. They must consume majja.



Snehas
suffering from vata diseases. Or engage into physical labour and sexual activity. Those who do a lot of thinking work. They must consume snehas.

Those people from whom saliva comes out of the mouth. Diarrhea and indigestion or amnorrhea. Those who have problems of stomach. They should not consume snehas.

Pregnant and weak person must not consume snehas . Don't consume snehas while taking enema.
